You asked, Dr. Shenker answered.

The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, Dr. Robert ShenkerHave you ever had a burning question about the surgical or non-surgical treatments we offer that you wish you could ask Dr. Shenker himself? Recently, he gave our patients and followers the chance to do just that. We put out a request for questions on our social media channels (follow us on Facebook and Instagram to make sure you don’t miss future opportunities like these!), and Dr. Shenker was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer each and every one.

In case you missed it, here are his answers to your most pressing questions.

Q: Does a breast reduction also lift the breasts?

A: The answer is yes! Every breast reduction also incorporates a breast lift. Along with the removal of excessive weight comes an elevation and re-positioning of the areola and the nipple in a manner similar to a breast lift. What is, however, very important to remember is that when you have a breast reduction you also get smaller breasts! With a breast lift, the size can be made smaller, larger or stay generally the same. That’s a big difference between the two procedures.

Q: Under what circumstances might you recommend a breast lift before childbirth?

A: Almost never. I would only recommend it in very specialised circumstances such as with certain congenital breast development issues, or in women with a very large weight loss. Those situations and others would be discussed with the patient before surgery. To really benefit from a breast lift operation, it is ideal to have a significant amount of time between breast lift surgery and having children, but ultimately, the decision is up to the individual patient.

Q: Can a breast augmentation look natural?

A: Yes. A breast augmentation done well should always look natural.

Q: Can you get a tummy tuck and a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) at the same time?

A: At our clinic, we don’t perform BBLs and tummy tucks at the same time. In fact, given the recent very significant safety concerns surrounding Brazilian butt lift surgery, we have stopped doing butt lift procedure altogether for now.

Q: When would you recommend CoolSculpting for the double chin vs. liposuction?

A: Liposuction is an option for anyone who is a good surgical candidate in general, whereas CoolSculpting will only work if you have the proper chin and neck structure, size and shape to properly fit into the CoolScupting neck applicator. A consultation with our Coolsculpt expert, Beauty Nurse Lauren, will let you know which one would be best for you!

Q: What’s your favourite plastic surgery operation to perform?

A: I am at a very fortunate time in my career that allows me to do only the operations that I enjoy! So if I do an operation in my clinic, it’s one of my favourites.

Q: Besides wearing sunscreen, what can I be doing in my 30s to prevent ageing?

A: Neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport are the cornerstone of visible aging prevention. Forever Young BBL, photorejuvenation treatments, regular peels and staying out of the sun altogether are also a big help.

A common myth about neuromodulators is that their primary function is to treat existing wrinkles. The truth is, they are best used to prevent wrinkles, not treat them, so start sooner rather than later!

Q: What’s your favourite thing about Waterloo?

A: Watching the city grow and change! All the amazing life and vitality that has sprung up in the 11 years that I have been here is so energizing! And don’t overlook the coffee. There is an abundance of wonderful espresso in KW!
