Composite Breast Augmentation

Dr. Robert Shenker on the latest advancement in breast augmentation surgery.

Dr. Shenker discusses composite breast augmentation.

I believe in evolution. Particularly, in the evolution of surgical procedures as the years pass, and we surgeons and the scientists who support us get smarter and more insightful about the operations we do.

Breast augmentation surgery has evolved at our Kitchener-Waterloo clinic from the days when we used less-than-perfect saline implants that had to be placed under the pectoralis muscle, which itself had to be cut and repositioned to make space for the implant.

How have you made breast augmentation better?

The latest innovation in breast augmentation surgery harnesses the dramatic improvements in highly cohesive silicone breast implants and the rapidly evolving science of fat grafting. At The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, we call this new operation a “composite breast augmentation”. In this ground-breaking, innovative operation, a moderate or full profile, highly cohesive silicone gel breast implant is placed under the breast tissue, but above the intact pectoralis muscle. The upper pole “step-off” deformity that can result from implants placed above the muscle (which can yield a less natural shape and possible rippling) is then eliminated by transferring some fat from the abdomen or thighs to the upper pole of the breast. That fat transfer, discussed in this blog post, is called fat grafting.

The result is a beautiful, soft, natural-looking breast with a full upper pole and an intact pectoralis muscle in the chest.

Why is it good to leave the chest muscle intact?

Leaving the muscle intact avoids troublesome issues like bleeding, prolonged pain and swelling, and, most importantly, animation deformity. Animation deformity is the very un-natural appearing deformation of a submuscular implant that is commonly seen with muscle contraction, such as in the gym, in the bedroom, or even during normal daily activities.

So, if you are interested in the newest form of breast augmentation, like the many women we see from London, Hamilton, and other Ontario communities, come talk to us about composite breast augmentation. After all, if Mother Nature wanted the breast under the pectoralis muscle, she would have put it there in the first place. Contact us to arrange a consultation today.
