Who is a candidate for labiaplasty?

The appearance of the vagina isn't the only reason women consider labiaplasty. Irritation and discomfort during sexual intercourse can be caused by stretched or enlarged labia. Labiaplasty is a good option for women who:

  • Are embarrassed by the size, shape, or appearance of their labia
  • Have skin rashes, irritation, or hygiene problems such as trapped moisture
  • Avoid certain clothing styles due to their labia
  • Are uncomfortable during sexual activity

What are my options for labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is cosmetic surgery with the goal of improving the appearance of the labia. Reconstructive surgery such as vaginoplasty is a procedure to correct functional issues. In some cases, the 2 procedures are combined as part of a vaginal rejuvenation.

In labiaplasty, plastic surgery can be performed on the labia majora (the larger, outer vaginal lips), or the labia minora (the smaller, inner vaginal lips). Vaginoplasty might be necessary to tighten a vagina that is lax as result of giving birth vaginally.

What should I expect after surgery?

During a labiaplasty procedure, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is reshaped to achieve symmetrical, attractive genitalia. Although each patient's recovery is unique, most women are able to sit and walk on the day of the surgery. Light activity such as walking is encouraged, but it's important to avoid more strenuous exercise for about a month after surgery. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
