How to manage and prevent age spots this summer.

sun damage, microlaserpeel, chemcial peels, brightening serum

Your guide to keeping brown spots at bay.

It’s not uncommon to notice freckles and brown spots surfacing and/or darkening as the sunlight intensifies. When these signs of sun damage begin to make an appearance, they are often persistent and require year-round maintenance in order to keep them in check.

At The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, we offer a variety of non-invasive procedures and at-home products that nurture an even skin tone. Over the summer season, these are our go-to treatments for beautifully bright skin.

Sunscreen.

It’s simple, but true. The number one trigger for the development of hyperpigmentation is sun exposure. In order to keep skin discolouration at bay, wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 daily is non-negotiable.

FYI: The SPF 15 in your foundation is no longer active by lunchtime, so keep this in mind and amplify your skincare game by reapplying your sunscreen throughout the day.

NOTE: Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30/50 brush-on mineral sunscreen is an ideal option to take the sticky mess out of reapplying sunscreen.

A Brightening Serum.

Applying a serum with high concentrations of pigment-inhibiting ingredients is vital to fade existing brown spots and keep new pigmentation at bay. SkinMedica’s Lytera® Skin Brightening Complex is a go-to treatment of our clinic staff and beauty editors alike for its exceptional complexion-evening results, which can be seen within 4 weeks of daily use.

In-office treatments to manage and prevent age spots.

There is nothing quite like a professional treatment to realize substantive improvements in skin clarity and texture. Over the summer months, when the skin is more vulnerable to sun damage, we turn to these non-invasive procedures to maintain luminous and even skin.

Chemical Peels

Exfoliation is an important component in maintaining an even skin tone. Chemical peels that incorporate glycolic acid and/or lactic acid are proven to inhibit pigmentation while removing dead and damaged skin cells. The result: ultra-smooth and radiant skin.

MicroLaserPeel™

This specialized laser treatment is a favourite of our aesthetic nurses for its ability to provide the desirable outcomes of a laser—refined pores and skin texture, and a more even skin tone—but with no downtime. As this treatment only removes a thin layer of the skin, it poses minimal photosensitizing risks compared to more invasive laser therapies.

We recommend patients seeking to improve their skin tone with at-home and in-office procedures to follow a strict sun protection regimen and avoid exposing their skin to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. This applies to any time of year, but is especially important over the summer months in order to maintain the results that have been achieved.
