The top 4 ways to beat winter skin dryness.

Even though we have had an unusually mild winter thus far in Ontario, we are not exempt from the typical skin dryness that accompanies cooler temperatures. Just as we need to bundle up against the elements, our skin needs extra reinforcement to stay healthy and hydrated over the winter. These simple strategies can make the difference between flaky, dull, irritated skin and a covetable, dewy complexion.

1 | Layer up.  Just as you wear a base layer to keep the frigid air at bay, layering your skincare products is a must to combat winter dryness. Integrate a hydrating serum to reinforce moisture levels in the skin (our pick: Alyria’s Intense Hydrating Serum) and apply a winter-weight moisturizer over top. Look for formulations that contain plant ceramides, shea butter and omega fatty acids to hydrate and nourish the skin. Some people with normal or oily skin shy away from using a heavier moisturizer; if this is you, we suggest working with one of our skin experts to find a suitable moisturizer that will not overwhelm your skin. The benefits of making this switch over the winter months will prevent premature aging due to dehydration—which is a win for your skin

2 | Wear sunscreen and sunnies. Foregoing your daily sunscreen application and sunglasses due to the dark winter days is a common skincare mistake that people make. There is still plenty of opportunity for sun damage to occur in the winter months—especially with UV rays hitting us twice: once from the atmosphere and once again when reflecting off of snow. We suggest keeping up the daily habits of wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and sunglasses to reduce this preventable damage.

3 | Hot water is a no-no. As comforting as a hot bath or shower may feel, it is a sure-fire way to dry out your skin. Opting for warm water when bathing will do your skin a major favour. If you cannot resist the temptation of a hot bath, we recommend using a bath oil to nourish your skin while you bathe. Follow up your bath or shower by immediately applying a body oil, lotion or cream; this will prevent moisture-loss and reinforce skin hydration.

4 | Exfoliate. Polishing away the surface layer of dead skin cells not only activates cell renewal for younger skin, it also prevents skin flaking, dullness and fine lines. Additionally, your moisturizing products will work more effectively after a round of exfoliation. Retinoid creams, scrubs and chemical exfoliants are all excellent at-home exfoliation options. Additionally, regular in-office microdermabrasion treatments provide amplified skin smoothing benefits and an instant glow that cannot be replicated at home.

Adapting your skincare routine to address seasonal changes is essential to maintain healthy and beautiful skin.
