Hi Sarah!

Are there any common misconceptions about lasers?

A: Definitely. Firstly, not all lasers are created equal! There are many different technologies on the market, and it is important for a patient to do their due diligence to ensure they are making an educated and informed decision and to choose a clinic that is up to date on the most current innovations in laser technology. It is imperative to ensure that a patient’s expectation of results matches what a clinic states they can do with laser technology.

Another common misconception is that laser treatment results are achieved with just one treatment. It is highly unusual that one treatment would provide optimal results. Correcting and improving the skin takes time and is not something that should be rushed.  Careful planning should be considered to ensure the safest and best possible result. You can see some of our patients’ results after a series of treatments in our laser skin treatment photo gallery.

It is easy to forget that the skin is the body’s largest organ. It’s so important for patients to be in capable hands! I think it is very important to seek a clinic that has an experienced physician as a medical director. At The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, we prioritize patient safety above all else.

What do you love most about working with lasers?

A: I love the Sciton JOULE X™ platform as it is a multi-modality system that offers a range of treatments.

We have a light-based technology called BroadBand Light™ (BBL) which is very effective for addressing colour tones (brown spots and redness), and acne. (You can learn more about its effectiveness in this BBL study.)

We have 3 types of laser services that are great for improving the quality and texture of the skin such as fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. We offer HALO™, ProFractional™, and MicroLaserPeel® treatments.

Having these treatments at my disposal allows me to customize treatment plans for my patients–so that each patient has a personalized laser treatment plan perfectly suited to their goals.

Is laser treatment or laser skin resurfacing painful?

A: This is a common question during the consultation process and is often difficult to answer as everyone experiences their treatment differently. Patient comfort and safety are a top priority, so we make sure you’ll know exactly what to expect when your treatment begins.Sarah

I take time to explain the sensation of the treatment, as I have personally had most of the treatments we offer.

We can mitigate discomfort for the patient, but I assure you, the results are worth it!  One great advantage of having a skilled surgeon like Dr. Shenker on site all the time is that if patients are really sensitive, Dr. Shenker is always available to do some nerve blocks using a local anesthetic to make sure our laser patients are completely comfortable.

Is laser treatment good for skin? What results can you expect?

A: During the consultation process we learn about the patient’s expectation of results, and they have a chance to learn about what to expect from each treatment.

BroadBand Light (BBL) treatment is a wonderful treatment to address the colour tones such as brown spots and broken blood vessels. After a series of treatments, the skin looks healthier and more radiant. It is amazing how great your skin can look when it’s freed from the damage that’s built up over the years.

Laser treatments such as HALO are fantastic for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and tone.  After a series of treatments, your skin has that HALO glow!

ProFractional Resurfacing is the gold standard for acne scars, and while we cannot completely eradicate acne scars, we can dramatically improve these scars, making them far less noticeable.

A couple of important notes about unhealthy skin:

  • When your skin is damaged it doesn’t reflect light. Instead, light is absorbed making it look flat, matte, and lackluster.
  • When your skin is healthy, light reflects off your skin giving you a healthy, natural look.

When you pursue laser or light-based treatments, this is one of the first improvements you will start to see.

What else do you recommend to your laser patients?

A: I am very passionate about at-home skincare routines. Using medical-grade skincare products is an important factor to consider when thinking about how to maintain your treatment results. When you come to see me for a laser treatment, we’ll explore the best ways to maintain and optimize the results.
