BOTOX COSMETIC®

Discussing the Many Uses

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is a wrinkle smoothing injectable that has been safely used for cosmetic purposes since its U.S. FDA approval in 2002. Today, BOTOX has a variety of other cosmetic uses including slimming the jawline, enhancing lips, smoothing chin dimples, and treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

How does BOTOX work?

Repeated muscular contractions, such as frowning and squinting, form lines known as dynamic wrinkles. Neuromodulators work by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, giving the face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. When BOTOX COSMETIC is injected into the muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area. As a result, the muscle relaxes, and the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

How is BOTOX different than Dysport Aesthetic?

Another neuromodulator, Dysport Aesthetic is a newer alternative to BOTOX that achieves similar results. Dysport can help soften frown lines and forehead wrinkles for up to 4 months. It may be a better choice than BOTOX for larger areas and results may appear slightly sooner than BOTOX, but both wrinkle relaxers are made from the same active ingredient.

Common Treatment Areas

Injectable wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX and Dysport are frequently used to rejuvenate the upper face by smoothing away the following types of dynamic wrinkles:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows (11s)
  • Crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
  • Bunny lines at the top of the nose

How much does BOTOX cost in Ontario?

The cost for a BOTOX treatment depends on the specific areas treated and the number of units needed. You will be given an actual treatment price during your consultation after your provider talks with you about your cosmetic goals and fully evaluates your needs.

How do I choose between BOTOX and Dysport?

BOTOX and Dysport use the same active ingredient, work in the same way, and last about the same amount of time; however, there are some minor differences between these products. Dysport’s consistency is thinner, which makes it well suited to treat larger, more diffuse areas of the face. During your consultation, your Beauty Nurse will discuss your options and determine which treatment is right for you.

BOTOX vs. dermal fillers

Both BOTOX and dermal fillers are injectable products used for temporary facial rejuvenation; however, they work in different ways and provide different improvements.

  • BOTOX relaxes the specific facial muscles it is injected into allowing the skin to smooth out. It is used to correct lines and wrinkles caused by the contractions of facial muscles.
  • Dermal fillers rejuvenate the face and the back of the hands by restoring volume lost to the aging process and exposure to the sun. Fillers can also be used to replace or add volume to the cheeks, temples, lips, and other areas.

What’s a lip flip with BOTOX?

The lip flip is a way to make the upper lip look fuller without actually adding volume. Precise injections of BOTOX into the muscle of the upper lip allow it to relax and turn—or flip—upwards slightly. The result gives the upper lip a fuller look by exposing more of the red vermillion. The BOTOX lip flip can be combined with lip fillers to add volume to the lower lip and define the upper lip.

What is the treatment like?

Our injectable experts, The Beauty Nurse® team, perform these treatments by injecting a tiny amount of BOTOX or Dysport very precisely into the muscle associated with the line or wrinkle. A very fine needle and a small amount of liquid are used to minimize discomfort. The sensation of the injection has been compared to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

What’s a liquid facelift?

We often combine BOTOX and dermal filler injections to smooth wrinkles and refine the shape of the face. This combination procedure provides a nonsurgical liquid facelift called a Soft Lift™. (Learn more in this blog post.) This nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatment is excellent for correcting early to moderate signs of aging. More significant aging usually requires facelift surgery for noticeable, long-lasting rejuvenation.

FAQ

How can injectables be used to slim the jawline?
Enlarged jaw muscles (masseter muscles) can be caused by jaw clenching and teeth grinding during sleep (bruxism). Injecting BOTOX into the masseter muscles (often called masseter BOTOX) allows the muscles to gradually relax and the square angle of the jawline to slim into a softer curve. While this treatment sounds simple, it is especially important to choose an experienced injector to avoid unintended results.
Can BOTOX treat a double chin?
We offer effective nonsurgical double-chin treatments such as BELKRA™, as well as surgical liposuction. BOTOX can slim the jawline and correct vertical neck bands, but it won’t really affect a double chin.
Will my face still have expression?
BOTOX and Dysport are intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of your facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will retain normal feeling in the treated areas.
Are BOTOX and Dysport treatments safe?
BOTOX COSMETIC and Dysport treatments are very safe when performed by experienced professionals. Risks include bruising at the injection site and the possibility of unintentionally affecting nearby muscle groups. Specific risks should be discussed with your injector when considering treatment. Bear in mind that since its approval for cosmetic use in Canada well over a decade ago, many millions of doses of BOTOX have been administered to patients, with safe and beautiful results.
How long does a treatment take?
The procedure is quick and simple, and there is no downtime. Following a brief consultation, analysis, and a discussion on your desired outcome, the procedure itself usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to perform.
Is there anything I should avoid after getting BOTOX injections?
While there is no recovery time needed, we recommend avoiding the following after treatment for optimal results:
  • Lying down for up to 4 hours
  • Strenuous exercise for 12 hours
  • Excessive alcohol consumption for 24 hours
How soon will I see a difference?
You can expect to see noticeable results 3 to 5 days after your BOTOX treatment. The appearance of wrinkles and lines may continue to diminish for up to 2 weeks.
