What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying muscles for a firmer, flatter midsection. It is particularly beneficial for those with loose or sagging abdominal skin due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging. Whether you want to improve your shape after pregnancy or simply desire a sleeker silhouette, abdominoplasty can help you achieve a more contoured and toned appearance.

Are You a Candidate for Tummy Tuck?

Consider the following factors to determine if abdominoplasty is right for you:

Excess Skin

Ideal candidates often have excess skin or laxity in the abdominal area, which may result from pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging.

Muscle Separation

If you have diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles), which commonly occurs after pregnancy, a tummy tuck can restore a smoother, firmer abdominal wall.

Health Status

You should be in good overall health and free from medical conditions that might affect healing or increase surgical risks.

Weight Stability

You should already be at or near your ideal weight before surgery, as this will help ensure the best and most lasting results from your tummy tuck.

For optimal safety, you should quit smoking for at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after your tummy tuck.

How Should You Prepare for Surgery?

First, you will have a thorough consultation with one of our surgeons to determine your procedure goals. The clinic’s patient coordinator will then guide you through all the procedure’s planning details, including financing, scheduling, and paperwork.

Preparation Tips

  • Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, as these can increase bleeding.
  • Quit smoking at least a couple of months before surgery and throughout recovery.
  • Make sure that you have someone who can drive you home after surgery.
  • Arrange for someone to help you with routine tasks during the first several days at home.
  • Prepare your home before your surgery day.
  • Schedule time off work for your recovery.

How Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

Your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat during your procedure while tightening or repairing the abdominal muscles to create a flatter, firmer midsection. Instead of traditional drains, we use progressive tension sutures to eliminate spaces where fluid can collect. In some cases, your surgeon may use liposuction to further refine your abdominal shape and contours. We use dissolvable stitches to close the incisions, further promoting a smooth healing process with minimal scarring.

Depending on your goals and anatomy, your surgeon may recommend a full tummy tuck (which addresses both the upper and lower abdomen), an extended or fleur de lis tummy tuck to remove a greater amount of loose skin, or a mini tummy tuck that focuses solely on the lower abdomen.

Why Choose a Drainless Tummy Tuck?

Our advanced drainless tummy tuck technique offers several key benefits over traditional methods that rely on drains:

  • Lower Risk of Fluid Buildup: The drainless approach significantly reduces the chances of developing a seroma (a pocket of fluid that can form after surgery), which helps minimize swelling and lowers the risk of infection.
  • Enhanced Comfort and Recovery: Using “progressive tension sutures” (PTS) eliminates the need for drains, which can be uncomfortable and messy and require regular upkeep during the first several days after your surgery. This technique promotes a quicker, more comfortable healing process.
  • Minimized Scarring: Progressive tension sutures also relieve pressure from the skin’s surface, which can result in a finer, more aesthetically pleasing scar.

Without the hassle and other drawbacks of drains, you can relax and focus on your healing and recovery.

Tummy Tuck Scars

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize visible scarring while achieving optimal results. They typically make the incision low on the abdomen, just above the pubic area, where it is easily concealed with underwear or swimwear. With proper care, tummy tuck scars will gradually fade and become less noticeable.

Combining Procedures

We often combine tummy tuck surgery with breast lift procedures or liposuction for more dramatic results.

Tummy Tuck With Breast Lift

Like the tummy, the breasts are often left with excess, sagging skin after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Many women have their breasts lifted and reshaped when they undergo a tummy tuck. This combination is known as a Mommy Makeover.

Tummy Tuck With Liposuction

Liposuction is frequently used during a tummy tuck operation to sculpt the waist, hips, and flanks for a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the midsection.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From a Tummy Tuck?

While every patient’s recovery journey is unique, here are some general recovery guidelines to help you prepare:

  • First 24 hours post-op: You will have a compression garment around your abdomen to minimize swelling and support your new contours. You can manage any initial discomfort with prescribed pain medication.
  • 1 to 2 weeks post-op: Most swelling and bruising should subside significantly. Many patients gradually resume non-strenuous activities or return to work during this time. We will schedule a follow-up visit with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress.
  • 3 to 4 weeks post-op: You may begin to engage in light physical activities at this stage, but you should avoid strenuous exercises until your surgeon gives the all-clear.
  • 6 weeks post-op and beyond: You should be able to return to your regular exercise routine. The appearance of your scars will continue to improve over time, and your final results will become more apparent. We will invite you to return yearly for ongoing follow-up.

These timelines can vary from patient to patient, so following your surgeon’s instructions is essential to ensure a smooth recovery.

FAQ

How long will the results of a tummy tuck last?
With a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle, the results of your tummy tuck can be long-lasting. However, significant weight changes or future pregnancies can impact your outcome.
When can I stand up straight after surgery?
You may not be capable of walking completely upright for 2 to 3 weeks due to muscle and skin tightening. You will gradually gain range of motion, and your surgeon will guide you on when it’s safe to stand upright again.
What is the cost of a tummy tuck in Waterloo-Kitchener?
The cost of a tummy tuck varies based on your unique needs and the surgical technique used. We encourage you to schedule a consultation for a personalized quote tailored to your goals.

We offer financing options to help make your desired look attainable.
How do I know if I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?
A tummy tuck is ideal if you have excess skin, weakened abdominal muscles, or stretched skin from pregnancy or weight loss. Liposuction is better for removing stubborn fat without excess skin. Your surgeon can help determine which option is best based on your goals.
Will my results be permanent?
The results of a tummy tuck or liposuction are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. However, aging and significant weight changes can affect your results over time.
How much weight can I lose with a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. It removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles, sculpting the midsection. While you may lose a few pounds, the goal is to create a more contoured silhouette and help your clothes fit better.
