I had a delightful glimpse into a reflection of my past last night. I was privileged to be asked to speak to the University of Laurier Health Studies students about life as a surgeon. Their bright eyes and insightful questions were a delight: what’s the best part about being a surgeon? How and why did I choose plastic surgery? What was the coolest case I ever had? What is it like to operate on someone and change their lives for the better? What do they have to do to achieve their goals of getting in to medical school and becoming doctors?
I remember fondly the burning, irresistible force that led me to pursue a career in medicine, and in plastic surgery. I knew early on in my life that it was the only path for me. These students reminded me of the intense focus and determination I had at that stage of my life.
It was a joy to see that same passion and drive alive and well in these brilliant young men and women.
As a society, we should be so glad that these kids are out there, striving to be the best they can be. We should all wish them the best!
