All about labiaplasty.

Cosmetic labiaplasty is an operation that is not often discussed. However, a growing number of women are choosing this procedure to address issues such as congenital disorders, chafing from excess skin, or, most commonly, simply for aesthetic reasons. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, aesthetic surgery of the external female genitalia increased 48 per cent from 2013 to 2014.

What’s behind this phenomenon? Yoga pants are a big part of the reason, according to this New York Post article. Looking good in athletic wear along with the practicalities of preventing chafing and irritation during workouts are among the reasons more women are opting for this surgery.

What does labiaplasty involve?

A labiaplasty can correct the size and shape of excessively long, bulky, or asymmetrical labia.
The surgical techniques employed aim to restore balance, symmetry and function to the vulva while maintaining a natural look. Surgical methods include trimming away excess skin with a scalpel or medical laser, or a combination of both.

Labiaplasty is performed as a day surgery and involves minimal postoperative pain. Some swelling of the tissue is to be anticipated. A return to normal, non-strenuous activities can be expected after 3-4 days, and full recovery after approximately four weeks.

The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic’s three highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeons are sensitive to the physical and emotional concerns that motivate patients to consider labiaplasty. If the size and appearance of your external genitalia negatively impacts your daily activities, physical comfort and self-esteem, or you simply wish to make aesthetic improvements, we welcome you to book a surgical consultation.
