Only the latest and greatest for our patients.
Change is the one constant in life and in the case of plastic surgery, change tends to be very positive for patients. Advancements in surgical methods, such as the drainless tummy tuck, often translate to better results and a smoother recovery. For Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge and London, Ontario, patients, we’re excited to be providing one such innovation in surgical techniques for abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck.
Introducing the drainless tummy tuck.
That heading may have you thinking–what’s a drain anyway? Plastic surgery procedures occasionally require the placement of drains that prevent the accumulation of blood and fluids during the healing process. Sometimes these drains need to be emptied several times a day, so eliminating them from the surgical process is quite simply ideal!
With a drainless tummy tuck, the use of progressive tension sutures (PTS) replaces the need for drains. These sutures “quilt” the tummy tuck skin flap down to the abdominal wall and provide an effective means to prevent fluid from accumulating and/or spreading from one area to another. This technique has also been shown to minimize the risk of secondary infections, thus enhancing patient comfort and safety. Dr. Shenker provides more details in a separate blog post.
One of the common concerns people have about surgery is the resulting visible scar. With progressive tension sutures, there is less tension placed on the incision closure during the healing process, thus allowing for a finer and ultimately less noticeable surgical scar.
It’s time for that tummy tuck.
