The First Rule for Healthy, Age-Defying Skin: Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen!

After a long and cold Ontario winter, we’re welcoming the sun with open arms! But not without a layer of broad-spectrum sunscreen to keep our skin at its best!

There are many who feel that sunscreen is something reserved for weekends at the cottage and lunchtime patio dates. We’re here to tell you that while this is a good practice, it doesn’t quite cut it when it comes to having and maintaining youthful skin.

The Effects of Not Wearing Sunscreen Are Dramatic

The sun exposure we accumulate over a lifetime is responsible for 90% of the visible signs of skin damage that we notice as we age. UV photos of sun damage on people throughout their lives show how this damage adds up over the years—and it’s eye-opening.

That damage to your skin, combined with the risk of skin cancer, is why it is so important to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 every day—regardless of how much time you plan to spend in the sun. You see, even the 40 minutes of exposure to sunlight you get on your commute to work adds up to hundreds of hours of accrued sun damage over the entire year, and that’s a lot of potential sun damage.

So while we’re really very happy to see the spring sun, we’re also happily applying and reapplying our favourite sun protection products. We especially like TIZO® sunscreen products because they contain physical UV blockers like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

How Often Should You Reapply Sunscreen?

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends reapplying sunscreen every 4 to 6 hours if you’re indoors and not near any windows. Otherwise, use your sunscreen every 2 hours. Use about an ounce of sunscreen each time you apply it to your body, so you can be sure to cover yourself thoroughly. You can find more sunscreen tips in one of our related blog posts.

What If You Already Have Sun Damage?

Several treatments can improve sun-damaged skin, addressing issues such as hyperpigmentation, melasma, rough texture, brown spots, fine lines, and more. Some popular options include:
